Short answer
The Azure cost optimization and security assessment is a free, read-only review of an organization’s Azure subscriptions. It covers spend by service and resource, idle and oversized virtual machines, orphaned disks, snapshots and public IP addresses, reservation and savings plan coverage, Azure Advisor findings and internet exposure, and ends with a prioritized plan with the expected saving for each change.
Starting points
Who the Azure cost optimization assessment is for
The cost of waiting
Cloud waste is rising again
Most waste is quiet.
Disks left behind after a VM is deleted, servers sized for a peak that never came, and commitments that no longer match the workload.
What we check
What the assessment covers
Spend by service and resource
Where the money goes this month and last, and which resources drive the change.
Idle and oversized VMs
CPU use over time for every virtual machine, flagged for shutdown or right-sizing.
Orphaned resources
Unattached disks, old snapshots and unused public IP addresses you still pay for.
Reservations and savings plans
What your commitments cover today and what Microsoft’s recommendations suggest for your usage.
Azure Advisor findings
Cost, security and reliability recommendations, checked and ranked rather than listed.
Internet exposure
Public IP addresses and internet-facing services reviewed alongside the spend.
Azure Virtual Desktop
Host pool sizing, autoscale schedules, session density and idle session hosts, with the saving for each change.
Your options
Advisor on its own, a FinOps tool, or an assessment
Azure gives you the raw recommendations. The assessment turns them into decisions.
| Azure Advisor alone | FinOps tool subscription | Our assessment | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Output | A list of recommendations | Dashboards | A ranked plan with the saving for each change |
| Commitments | Recommendations | Tracked | Reservations and savings plans sized to your usage |
| Security exposure | Separate tab | Rarely | Reviewed alongside cost |
| Who does the work | You | You | You, or we implement it |
| Cost | Included | Annual license | Free |

Common questions
Azure cost optimization: questions people ask
How do you reduce Azure costs?
Start with what is paid for and unused: delete orphaned disks, snapshots and public IP addresses, shut down or resize idle and oversized virtual machines, and set schedules for test systems. Then cover steady workloads with reservations or a savings plan. Our Azure cost optimization assessment ranks each change by the saving it brings.
Why is Azure so expensive?
Usually because of what nobody switched off or sized down: machines sized for a peak that never came, resources left behind by old projects, and pay-as-you-go rates on workloads that run all year. Azure cost management means watching those three every month, not only at renewal.
How do you estimate Azure costs?
For new workloads, use Microsoft’s Azure pricing calculator with realistic sizes and hours. For running workloads, real spend by service and resource in Cost Management is a better guide; our assessment starts from that and shows the expected saving for each change.
Questions buyers ask
Before you decide
What is the difference between Azure reservations and savings plans?
A reservation gives the deepest discount on a specific resource type in one region for one or three years. A savings plan gives a smaller discount on almost any compute in exchange for a fixed hourly spend. Most estates use both: reservations for steady workloads and a savings plan for the rest. The plan says which fits each workload.
We run Azure Virtual Desktop. Does the assessment cover it?
Yes. We check host pool sizing, autoscale schedules, session density and idle session hosts, and whether reservations or savings plans cover your desktops. If you want the desktops managed afterwards, that runs under our managed services.
Do we have to move our Azure billing to you?
No. You can move it later if you want us to keep the plan on track, but the assessment does not depend on it.
Will you touch our production resources?
No. The access is read-only and we change nothing. If you later ask us to implement the plan, each change is agreed with you first.
What access do you need?
Read-only access to the subscriptions in scope. Customers who already buy through us use the delegated access they approved; others grant temporary read-only access and remove it at the end.
